Yellow Jackets shut down Bulldogs

With the No. 2 spot in 3A Region 6 on the line, the Glencoe defense proved to be the difference. The visiting Yellow Jackets limited Susan Moore to just 168 yards of total offense in a 27- 14 victory that left the Bulldogs as the No. 3 seed in the region.

Glencoe dominated the game early and set the tone with a scoring drive on the initial possession of the game. Austin Brown scored on a 1-yard run and the missed extra point left the Yellow Jackets on top 6-0 with 6:10 to play in the first quarter.

The lead grew to 13-0 early in the second quarter when Yellow Jacket quarterback Rhett Norman scored from 1 yard out. The one-play, 1-yard drive after the teams had swapped turnovers deep inside Susan Moore territory.

Two possessions later, the Bulldogs finally got back in the game. After a short Susan Moore punt, the Yellow Jackets looked to take command of the game from the Susan Moore 38. However, Susan Moore’s Martin Wade grabbed Norman and spun him to the ground. As he went down, the ball popped free and Bulldog linebacker Cody Alldredge grabbed the fumble and streaked 67 yards for the touchdown. Nestor Hinojosa’s kick was good and the Bulldogs trailed just 13-7 at the half.

The defenses dominated play through the first half of the third quarter but the Bulldogs were slowly losing the battle of field position.

Glencoe took over at the Bulldog 44 after a short punt and the Yellow Jackets needed just one play to go the distance. Norman started right on the option, cut back to the middle, and ran away from the Bulldog defense. The extra point put the Yellow Jackets up 20-7 with 5:27 to play in the third quarter.

Susan Moore’s offense finally came up with a play. On the first drive of the ensuing possession, quarterback Brett Glass – who had been pounded all night by the Glencoe defensive front – lofted a pass deep down the right side to Cody Sanders. The senior receiver went over a Yellow Jacket defensive back to grab the ball and then sprinted down the sideline for an 80- yard touchdown reception.

Hinojosa’s kick was good and the Yellow Jacket lead was just 20-14 with 5:07 left in the third quarter.

Neither team did much on the following possessions, although the Bulldog defense forced a Yellow Jacket fumble at midfield. Again the Bulldog offense could not move and was forced to punt.

Finally, the Bulldogs were backed up near their own goal line and were forced into another three-and-out. Freddie Hernandez hit a 32-yard punt but Seth Noojin’s 17-yard return put the Yellow Jackets at the Susan Moore 25.

Four plays later, Brown powered his way into the end zone from 10 yards out and the Glencoe lead was 27-14 with just 4:43 left on the clock and the Bulldogs were out of time.

Glencoe pounded out 247 yards on the ground (on 47 attempts) while limiting the Bulldogs to just 32 yards on 24 carries.

Glass passed for 113 yards and a touchdown but completed just 10 of 28 attempts and was intercepted three times.

Sanders caught two passes for 90 yards and a touchdown while Preston Kent rushed seven times for 23 yards. Phillip McEvoy caught six passes for 26 yards.

Dylan Bishop had nine tackles, including a sack, to lead the defense while Freddie Hernandez had eight tackles. Drake Compton, Kent, and Alldredge each had a fumble recovery.

One odd note, each team had three turnovers – three fumbles for Glencoe and three interceptions for Susan Moore.

Susan Moore (6-3) travels to Oneonta (6-3) this week.
