High school basketball in the area ground to a halt this week as several inches of snow and ice made travel all but impossible.

Blount County’s basketball coaches were set to meet last night to finalize plans and seeding for the Blount County Tournament coming up later this month.

Hayden High School will host the tournaments this year with the junior high set to take place next week and the varsity scheduled for the following week. Tuesday, Jan. 4 at Locust Fork Boys Locust Fork 63, Mortimer Jordan 53

The visiting Blue Devils controlled the game through three quarters, enjoying leads of 15-13, 30-26, and 42- 40 at the quarter breaks.

However, the Hornets outscored the visitors 23-11 in the final period to get the 10-point win.

Freshman guard Katelyn Williams hit a free throw with just 10 seconds left in overtime for what proved to be the game-winning point as the Lady Bulldogs upset the Lady Yellow Jackets.

The Lady Eagles got 18 points from Abbie Phillips and 10 from Brittney Martin but it wasn’t enough as Susan Moore (9-9) put three players in double figures.

The Bulldogs broke open a close game (45-45 after three quarters) by outscoring Appalachian 22-10 over the final eight minutes to get the win.

Appalachian (9-5) got 28 points from Cameron Cox and 15 from Jonathan Metzler.

Susan Moore was led by Josh Holmes’s game-high 31 points while Cody Alldredge chipped in 20. at Springville Boys Springville 47, Locust Fork 44

Three days earlier, Locust Fork had a big fourthquarter comeback against Mortimer Jordan. This time, the Hornets were the victim as the Tigers outscored the visitors 21-10 over the final eight minutes.

Locust Fork (7-10, 1-3) got 22 points from Clay Smith and seven from Stephen Greene.

Springville was led by Brandon Gilliland with 12 points. Saturday, Jan. 8 at Oak Mountain Boys Westminster 43, Appalachian 42

Westminster got revenge for an earlier loss at Appalachian by squeaking by the visiting Eagles.

Appalachian (9-6) was led by Cameron Cox with 19 points.

Westminster (9-8) got 21 points from Adam Gurley and 14 from Jeffrey Stanford.
