‘Wine associated with joy and glad tidings’

Weddings in ancient times often lasted many days. Twelve miles west of the Sea of Galilee approximately 2000 years ago a marriage feast occurred. Let us not forget, the wedding guests drank wine. When they eventually ran out of wine, a guest at the wedding performed his first miracle. Some purport that wine is not to be consumed, and that wine in the Bible refers to unfermented grape juice. This view is misguided. In Scripture, wine is usually associated with joy and glad tidings.

The Pharisees in a later instance, when defending their own righteousness, smugly declared to Jesus, “We be not born of fornication” (Jn. 8:41), implying Christ was. Factions in Blount County act as the Pharisees. The possible legalization of alcohol from the voice of the people, twisting the truth with fear tactics.

I am suggesting that as we go through life we try to “accentuate the positive.” I am asking that we look a little deeper for the good, that we still our voices of insult and sarcasm, that we more generously compliment virtue and still our voices of insult and sarcasm, that we more generously compliment virtue and effort.

I am not asking that all criticism be silenced. Growth comes of correction. Strength comes of repentance. Wise is the one who can acknowledge mistakes pointed out by others and change his or her course.

One of the most relevant episodes in the life of Jesus Christ occurred at the Last Supper when he raised the bread and the wine and blessed them … Wine is a spiritual food, a main element in the communion ritual; bread for Christ’s body, wine for his blood.

Historically, the cultivation of vine has been inextricably linked to the religious uses of wine, and wine, the result of man’s labor, cannot be seen just as an ordinary commodity. Its consumption relates to its production, and by consuming wine we are consuming space, time, and symbols. Wine could be defined as sacred; therefore, it should be legal to purchase in Blount County. And, it is regulated by the State of Alabama. Doctors even report that daily consumption of wine can reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease.
