Willis resigns as fire chief

With a tentative effective date of August 1, Oneonta Fire Chief Arthur Willis has resigned and accepted the position of section chief at the Alabama Fire College in Tuscaloosa.

Having served as fire chief for almost five years to the day, Willis said, “It’s been a really hard decision, but it is a great opportunity. The people of Oneonta have been just fantastic. Oneonta is family. Everybody knows everybody. I was immediately part of the family from day one. That is what made it such a hard decision.”

Willis’ new position will allow him to serve in a different capacity within the fire service industry. As section chief, he will be responsible for ensuring training is provided for all firefighters.

As Willis completes his tenure at Oneonta and begins focusing on his new position, he reflected on the last five years and said, “Blount County has the best fire departments you can be associated with. The fire departments help each other. I will take what I have learned here to the fire college. Oneonta and Blount County will always be a part of me.”
