Wildcats split four with Bulldogs

The 2021-2022 Blount County basketball season got underway Friday night at Hayden as the Wildcats hosted the Susan Moore Bulldogs.

The junior varsity girls played first, falling to the Bulldogs 18-56. The Bulldogs’ Cesa Hernandez led all scorers with 26, going three-for-three from behind the three-point line. Susan Moore’s Kirsten Ingram added 19. Hayden’s Emma Brown led Hayden with 5.

In junior varsity boys action, the Wildcats took a commanding 27-6 halftime advantage and coasted to a 45-21 win. Hayden’s Dillion Layton led all scorers with 10. Nine of the 12 Hayden players scored while seven of the 11 Bulldogs got on the board.

The varsity girls played Susan Moore, who scored 26 first-quarter points hitting eight three-pointers. The Bulldogs came away with a 68- 35 win. Leading all scorers was Lani Smallwood with 21. Cali Smallwood added 19 and Marisa Bryan had 18. Hayden’s Ramie Reid led the Wildcats with 9, Becca Benton had 8, and Skylar Lassiter added 7.

In the varsity boys game, Susan Moore held a 15-12 advantage after the first quarter and a 19-16 lead at halftime. Hayden won the third quarter 15-4 on the strength of freshman Carson Purkey, who hit three from behind the three-point line, and sophomore Carson White, who scored 6. Hayden extended the advantage to 57-30 in the final period.

Hayden’s White led all scorers with 10 while Carson Snow and Purkey added 9 each. Dawson Creel and Brody Garner both had 8, Cole Sims had 5, Will Vines had 4, and Brayden Burkett and Landon Bradford each had 2.

For Susan Moore, Angel Pechco had 8, Logan Blackwell had 7, Cody Taunton and Cameron Gilliland had 4 each, Angel Cartegena and Isaac Brothers had 3 each, and Derek Doty had 1.
