Westminster runs past Hayden


The Hayden Wildcats played host to the Westminster Wildcats for Homecoming 2017. Westminster came away with a 66-36 win.

The game was a see-saw battle through the first quarter. Hayden scored first after only three plays as senior running back Austin Turner ran in from 17 yards for the score. The point-after failed but Hayden was up 6-0 with 10:41 remaining in the first quarter.

Westminster answered quickly when Ian Theis hit Brooks Reinhardt for 60 yards and the touchdown. Cade Rawlings hit the point-after to put Westminster up 7-6 with 9:22 on the first quarter clock.

Hayden’s Turner scored his second touchdown of the night on a 3-yard run and he added the two-point conversion in to give Hayden a 14-7 lead with 6:01 still left in the first.

Westminster tied the game 14-14 when Thies connected with Reinhardt again, this time from 18 yards out.

Hayden would take their last lead of the night when sophomore fullback Evan Orr scored on an 8-yard run. The try for two failed but Hayden had a 20-14 lead with 1:45 remaining in the first.

Westminster scored four touchdowns in the second quarter while Hayden only managed one, Westminster took a 42-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Westminster’s Alex Stanley took the second half kickoff 70 yards for the score to put Westminster up 49- 28. Hayden’s Grant Green scored on a 3-yard run for the only score for Hayden in the second half. Westminster added two touchdowns and a late field goal to come away with the win.

The leading rusher for Hayden was Austin Turner, who had 163 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns. He also had two receptions for 23 yards. Evan Orr added 92 yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns. Senior Cam Nelson rushed for 76 yards on 13 carries and caught two passes for 27 yards.

The loss drops Hayden to 2-3 overall. The Wildcats are still undefeated at 2-0 in Class 5A Region 6 and travel to Springville to take on the winless Tigers this week.
