Warrior officer cleared

According to District Attorney Pamela Casey, officer Jimmy Rodgers of the Warrior Police Department has been cleared of any wrongdoing by a Blount County Grand Jury for the March 31, 2015, shooting of James Burns. The incident took place at Exit 289 on I-65 near County Road 5 when Warrior officers tried to stop a vehicle that had been reported stolen in Cullman County. Burns refused to stop, leading officers onto I-65. The cruiser collided with the car after leaving I-65 at Exit 289.

The officer attempted to arrest Burns, who refused to comply and acted in a manner that was threatening to the officer, and Rodgers shot Burns in the leg. Burns was charged with Receiving Stolen Property 1st, Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Attempting to Elude. He entered guilty pleas for all charges in May. Under the Alabama Sentencing Guidelines, he was sentence to 80 months and is currently housed in the Alabama Department of Corrections. The Alabama State Bureau of Investigations conducted the investigation.
