This year’s recipient of the Charles Carr Award for Blount County-Oneonta Chamber’s Volunteer of the Year is Sondra Horsley of Remlap. Horsley, who has worked tirelessly with the Blount County Literacy Council for several years, is involved in several tutoring and training opportunities within the program. She is also instrumental in providing reading intervention services for the most fragile participants at Blount County Schools Dreamcatchers summer camp.
With a belief that no one is ever too old to learn to read, Horsley has helped many individuals throughout the county learn to read over her years of volunteer service. Being trained as an Adult Basic Literacy and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) tutor, Horsley has been able to assess students’ specific needs and help them learn to read, write, and speak English, which in turn improves the quality of life for not only their family, but for the community as well.
In addition to her dedication and service to literacy concerns, Horsley has been instrumental as a volunteer at her church as she has worked with vacation Bible school, special projects, meal preparation for the elderly, and working with the youth. She has even taught local citizenship classes.
Horsley’s nominators repeatedly mentioned dedication, commitment, and a servant’s heart when highlighting her qualities as a nominee. She is truly an asset to Blount County.
