Veterans Day programs planned in county schools


 

 

Schools in Blount County make a special effort to convey the historic and patriotic importance of Veterans Day to students who will become the country’s citizens and defenders of tomorrow. Some programs are open to the public, while others are configured as learning events for students. The chart below gives pertinent details on observances in each school.

Appalachian

Date: Friday, Nov. 9
Time: 9 a.m.
Location: High school gym

Description: 6th grade students and teachers assigned to create content and conduct program for grades 4-12; band will participate.

Participation: student/teacher event

Blountsville Elementary

Date/Time: Friday, Nov. 2, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Location: Displays of student work in elementary school library

Description: Social studies fair for grades 3-8; students’ Veterans Day-related art, writing, history projects previously assigned will be on display

Participation: student/teacher event

Cleveland High School

Date/Time: Friday, Nov. 9, 8:30 a.m.

Location: High school gym, reception following in lunchroom

Description: Special historical program based on sinking of heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis following delivery of A-bomb components near the end of World War II.

Participation: Special invitation to veterans for recognition during program; open to public

Hayden High School

Date/Time: Thursday, Nov. 8, 9 a.m.

Location: High school gym

Description: “Let Freedom Ring” – symbols of American freedom, presented by students; commemorative awards to representative veterans

Participation: Open to public; arrive 15-30 minutes early for seating

Locust Fork High School

Date/Time: Friday, Nov. 9, 8:30 a.m.

Location: High school lunchroom; reception following for veterans and public

Description: Pledge, National Anthem; remarks by principal Tommy Smitherman; remarks by guest speaker Mark Moon; playing of military service hymns; reception for veterans and general public

Participation: Special invitation to veterans; open to public

Oneonta High School

Date/Time: Tuesday, Nov. 6, 9 a.m. Location: High school auditorium Description: “Let Freedom Ring” – symbols of American freedom, presented by students; commemorative awards to representative veterans

Participation: Open to public; arrive 15-30 minutes early for seating

Southeastern

Date/Time: Thursday, Nov. 8, 9 a.m.

Location: High school gym

Description: School choir sings patriotic songs; students speak on history of Veterans Day; veterans recognized from different branches of military; playing of “Taps” by history teacher and program coordinator (and trumpeter) Wiley Murphree; Beta Club induction ceremony.

Participation: Special invitation to veterans for recognition during program; open to public; arrive early for seating

Susan Moore High School

Date/Time: Friday, Nov. 9, 8:15 a.m.

Location: High school gym

Description: Welcome: overview of Veterans Day by principal Michael Stansberry; guest veteran(s) will speak; band will play patriotic songs

Participation: open to public
