An 18-month-old Cleveland boy, Enzo McCormack, was hospitalized last Friday with multiple injuries that were suspected by law enforcement of being caused by abuse. The child was airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham where he died Monday.
The child’s mother, 24-year-old Samantha McCormack, and her boyfriend, 28-year-old Robert Elmore, were both detained for questioning. The pair were formally charged Saturday morning with first degree assault. Elmore was also charged with attempted murder. Elmore is being held with no bond. McCormack’s bond is $1 million. Both are being held at the Blount County Sheriff’s Office jail. The charges are expected to be upgraded now that the child has died.
The case is being investigated by the BCSO and the Alabama Department of Human Resources.
In March of this year, McCormack sought and received a protection from abuse order from a Blount County court, alleging that Elmore posed a “credible threat” of physical abuse to her. Two hearings were scheduled in the case, but McCormack did not appear for either. The case was dismissed in June.
