The Blount County-Oneonta Chamber of Commerce and The Blount Countian will cosponsor a political forum at 7 o’clock tomorrow night – Thursday, Oct. 4 – at Eris Horton Auditorium at Oneonta High School.
All six candidates running for the office vacated by former State Rep. Elwyn Thomas have been invited to participate. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend to familiarize itself with the candidates and their positions.
The question-and-answer format will be similar to past political forums the chamber has hosted. Each candidate will have five minutes to make an opening statement and three minutes to close. Separate random drawings will be used to determine the order of appearance.
Following opening statements, candidates will be asked questions on political issues and related matters by forum moderator Rob Rice of The Blount Countian. Candidates will have two minutes to answer each question, and a one-minute rebuttal will be allowed to any candidate named in an answer.
Voters will go to the polls Oct. 23 to vote on Thomas’s replacement, who will serve the remaining two years of his term. If a runoff is required, which seems likely, the scheduled date is Dec. 11. No Democratic candidates qualified to run for the office.
Voters who are not registered still have time to do so. Deadline for the Oct. 23 primary is Oct. 12. Deadline for registering for the runoff election, if needed, is Nov. 31 for those who are still unregistered at that time. Registration deadline for the general election on Nov. 6 is Oct. 26.
