Thomas ‘Tommy’ Lee Rountree

THOMAS ‘TOMMY’ LEE ROUNTREE, 79, Oneonta, passed away Dec. 24, 2021, at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Birmingham. Tommy was born Sept. 30, 1942, in Dothan, to the late Julius Burton and Evelyn Mathison Rountree. He was a graduate of Shades Valley High School in 1960; he received a BA degree from Samford University and JD from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University. He practiced law in Oneonta from 1966 to 2005. He served as public defender in Lee County from 1985 to 1998 and public defender in Blount County from 1998 to 2005. He was elected District Attorney in 2005 and served in that position until his retirement.

Tommy married Martha Miller Nov. 16, 1963, at First Baptist Church Oneonta. His wife Martha Miller Rountree passed away May 24, 2021. Tommy resided at The Olive Home.

He leaves behind his children Mary Clare Rountree (Charles Matsos) and Paul Franklin “Frank” Garlington Rountree (Vangie); grandchildren Justin Rountree of Seattle, Wa., Josh Twitty and Caroline Twitty of Birmingham; great-grandchild Cosette Miller Twitty.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Jan. 6, at Lemley Funeral Home, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. A celebration of life service will be held in the Chapel of Lemley Funeral Home at 11 a.m. with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery. Lemley Crematory directing.
