Thank you

This past Saturday, a series of high school basketball games was held at Cleveland High School. Just as in other sporting events there were winners and losers, but that’s not what this is about. If you want to know which team won the games, you’ll find sports on page A4.

No, this is about raising money for a good cause. The cause is the fight against cancer.

I started this series of games in Blount County several years ago with the idea that the proceeds from the games – after officials and other expenses are paid, of course – would go to the local chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Like a lot of people, my family has gone through a loved one’s battle with the disease. I know how the doctor’s visits and tests – and the wait for results – and treatment can wear on a person. I would hazard a guess that there is not a person reading this who hasn’t experienced this with family or friends.

I would like to say thank you to Cleveland High School principal Denise Martin, boys coach Conny Lowery, girls coach Glenn Puckett, and everyone else at Cleveland who pitched in to raise money for this cause. I would also like to thank the fans for coming to the games – not just those from Cleveland but also those of the other teams that played. Fans from Alexandria, Cold Springs, and North Sand Mountain.

Last year’s games were held at Oneonta and almost $500 was raised. I believe when the final count comes later this week, we’ll have done even better.

Thank you again to all of those that came to the games, and if you didn’t make it this year, don’t worry. We’ll see you next year.
