This week, we celebrate those that are fighting breast cancer with our special section. We’ve tried to highlight local stories of people who continue to battle the disease and offer their perspective – in their own words as much as possible.
One story is particularly emotional for me … the story of my sister and her battle that ended 14 years ago. It’s the first time I’ve told her story and it was a lot tougher than I thought it would be. It is tough for me for several reasons. I’ve never used this newspaper to fight personal battles, settle grudges or attack anyone or anything from a personal standpoint and I never will.
However, my sister’s story has always been with me and I guess when it’s time, it’s time and now is the time. My sister fought breast cancer with everything she had and her friends and family were there for her every step of the way. It wasn’t easy, it wasn’t pretty and I’ve carried her story with me for a long time. Her best friend, my friend and managing editor, also shares her perspective.
Let’s just say there have been a lot of tears in the office this week. –rr
