Teacher arrested

Cleveland High School

Matt Wester, 37, has been charged with “a school employee having sexual contact with a student,” according to the Blount County Jail. According to his indictment, Wester “is a school employee who intentionally and knowingly engaged with a male or female student under the age of 19 in sexual contact including kissing and spending the night with the victim.”

Wester was released after posting a $6,000 bond last week.

The Cleveland High School math teacher was placed on paid leave in November following allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a female student.

Wester is also an assistant varsity football coach and head track team coach.

Blount County Superintendent Jim Carr said he received a call on Nov. 24 from DHR, after they had been contacted by Cleveland High principal Denise Martin. Carr contacted the Blount County District Attorney’s Office, and Wester was officially placed on leave Nov. 25.

According to Carr, Wester has had a clean work history with the system prior to this incident.
