Tina L. Cherry, visual arts specialist at Susan Moore Elementary School, has been nominated Alabama Art Education Association Rookie of the Year. Although she has just completed her 12th year of teaching, she has just completed her first year as a certified visual-arts specialist. Information on her SMES program and pictures of her students’ artwork have been featured on occasion in The Blount Countian.
Cherry has earned bachelor of science and master of education degrees from Auburn University. She has attended many workshops on the advantages students gain from the introduction of the arts into the school curriculum and has made numerous presentations for arts advocacy groups on how to incorporate the arts through literature. In addition, she has applied for and received several grants that have provided the tools that allowed her to create more meaningful lessons.
“What an honor it is to have fellow art teachers recognize the hard work that goes into a first-year program,” Cherry says.
She is a member of AEA, NEA, AAEA and NAEA.
