The Susan Moore High School Marching Band has been well and deservedly honored in many venues, including as of last week, in its own gym at Susan Moore High School. District 2 Commissioner Mike Painter above presents band director Skylar McHan, on behalf of the band, with a framed certificate of resolution adopted by the Blount County Commission recognizing the band’s signal achievement in winning the Alabama State Marching Competition Class 3A Championship. From left: District 2 school board member Philip Cleveland, band drum major Wyatt Koch, McHan, Painter, and Susan Moore principal Michael Stansberry. Band members occupy place of honor on the stage in the background.
A banquet table behind the delegation groans under the weight of hardware the band garnered just this year, winning competitions at Pinson Valley, Albertville, and Jacksonville State University en route to winning the state championship. The state of Alabama trophy occupys the center of the table, surrounded by five small loving cups for best in class drum major, colorguard, music quality, visual excellence, and general effect awards.
School pride was front and center this day as two of the speakers – Cleveland and Painter – represent multi-generational Susan Moore graduates, and their remarks reflected it. McHan’s Susan Moore pedigree is bi-generational with multiple representatives, past and present.
