Lester Memorial United Methodist Church and Red Cross of Alabama hosted a successful blood drive last Thursday, collecting 29 units.
Because there are so many ways to use units of blood – platelets, plasma, red blood cells, and whole blood – these donations could impact as many as 87 patients, according to Pam Fikes, donor recruiter of Red Cross of Alabama. “Summer blood collection is typically low and this summer is no different. We struggle to ensure an adequate blood supply for emergency use. The donors in Blount County are very dedicated and we appreciate the care and support they show by donating regularly,” Fikes says. “Community blood drives are very important as they provide convenient donation opportunities for our active blood donors in Blount County and the Oneonta area.” Red Cross thanks the co-sponsors of this event, Lester Memorial UMC, Johnna Pannell and RSVP Positive Maturity volunteer office.
