Students celebrate reading and writing week

Last week, Blount County students celebrated Reading and Writing Week, and Susan Moore Elementary students began the week with a special visit from Big Al and Aubie. The two college mascots came to the school for a reading and writing pep rally. Carol Pullen, instructional coach at Susan Moore Elementary, said she was thrilled when both mascots agreed to attend the festivities. ‘We didn’t even know it was an option, but Jodie Jacobs, Blount County school improvement specialist, recommended it, and when we e-mailed and asked both of them said yes.’ The theme of the week was Reading and Writing Champs, which fit perfectly with inviting the mascots to the school. ‘Reading and Writing Week is meant to promote reading and writing in the classroom and get students motivated to do that on their own time when not being forced,’ Pullen said. ‘We want to instill a lifelong love for reading and writing.’ – Nicole Singleton
