Scale Back Alabama, a 10-week weight loss competition, kicks off the week of January 12th and St. Vincent’s Blount will serve as a public weigh-in site. Teams of four can weigh in at any of St. Vincent’s Health System’s five locations (Birmingham, Blount, East, One Nineteen, or St. Clair). With a goal of losing half a million pounds statewide, the annual weight-loss competition is an attempt to encourage Alabamians to eat better and to exercise more. It is sponsored by Alabama’s hospitals and the Alabama Department of Public Health.
Roger Schultz, a finalist on the Biggest Loser Couples show last year, is serving as the chief coach for the 2009 Scale Back Alabama competition. Schultz will be encouraging participants and sharing tips from his own personal weightloss success.
“Locally, people can weigh-in at St. Vincent’s Blount,” said Sean Tinney, president and chief operating officer at St. Vincent’s Blount. “The weigh-in times will be January 14 from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and January 16 from 12 noon to 3:30 p.m. in the Outpatient Center, Suite 104 and teams must come together to sign up and have their official beginning weight recorded. The contest is designed for adults age 18 and older, and it’s free. Plus, every individual who completes the 10-week contest and loses at least 10 pounds will be placed in a drawing for cash prizes sponsored by the Alabama Hospital Association.” If all four team members lose at least 10 pounds, the team will be placed in a drawing for one of three grand prizes ($1,000 per team member, $500 per team member or $250 per team member). Individuals who lose at least 10 pounds, even if their team members didn’t, will be placed in a drawing for fifty $100 cash prizes.
“Alabama is currently listed as the third-most obese state in the nation, and there are numerous health problems directly correlated to obesity,” said Tinney. “We hope our community responds to the call to participate and becomes part of the half a million pounds lost. It would certainly be a terrific way to start the new year.”
