Springville holds off Hayden

The Hayden Wildcats once again left points on the field and fell 21-20 to region rival Springville last Friday night. Springville improved to 1-1 overall, 1-0 in 5A Region 6, while Hayden fell to 0-2 overall, 0-1 in the region.

The two teams traded touchdowns in the second, third, and fourth quarters and the difference in the game proved to be a missed extra point late in the game.

Springville did most of its work through the air as Jackson Findlay connected on touchdown passes of 61 yards and 11 yards to Isaiah Benson and 11 yards to Zach Mayo.

Hayden countered with Core Ward, who fired touchdown passes of five yards to Houston Stewart and 65 yards to Luke Wall.

Trailing 21-14 late in the game, the Wildcats got on the board with an 8-yard run by Parker Sims but the extra point kick was low and Springville was able to hang on for the win.

Hayden had more yards than Springville – 303 to 275 – but penalties left the Wildcats in long-yardage situations for much of the night.

The Wildcats finished with 244 yards on the ground, led by Sims with 86 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. John Smith had 74 yards on 16 attempts and Ward finished with 62 yards on just six carries.

Ward completed 9 of 19 passes for 131 yards.
