Snead reappoints two, tables police chief question

In a lengthy town council meeting, extended in part by a nearly 45-minute executive session, the Snead Town Council reappointed Rae Ware as town clerk and Lee Netherton as fire chief. Mayor Tim Kent abstained on both votes.

Councilors Jack Freeman moved and Trudy Campbell seconded to table consideration of the reappointment of Chuck McBrayer as police chief. Member Phillip McHan joined Kent in abstaining on that vote. Kent addressed McBrayer following the vote saying, “You’ll still continue as chief, temporarily.”

The council endorsed Kent’s request for a resolution to the attorney general. Kent asked the attorney general to provide an opinion on the legality of his holding office as mayor while employed as a deputy with the Marshall County sheriff’s department. Kent explained he wishes always to follow the law. Some have questioned the mayor’s ability to hold both positions.

A more detailed summary of the Dec. 8 actions viewed by over a score of observers will appear in next week’s issue.
