At the town’s regular council meeting, Snead Police Chief Alan Hicks announced his officers had arrested Dane Willoughby of Altoona and Tim Smith of Fyffe. Hicks revealed canine officer Marcus Hudgins assisted by his charge Di-Di made a safety checkpoint stop in the early morning hours of April 29. Di-Di provided a positive alert which led to a search revealing reported marijuana and counterfeit currency in the vehicle.
Based on that reported discovery, officers obtained search warrants for an Altoona address. Assisted by the Altoona Police Department, Etowah County Drug Task Force, and United States Secret Service agents, personnel recovered alleged additional counterfeit currency and equipment.
Hicks said his department and Secret Service officers continue investigating the alleged crimes. Both suspects have charges of possession of forged instruments in the first degree and possession of marijuana in the second degree. Pending results of further investigation, the men could face additional federal charges.
