Singing school open to all set Nov. 3-7 at local church

Chris Green, minister of music at Cleveland First Baptist Church, emphasizes the venue for an upcoming singing school that he, pastor Rick Dill, and the congregation are hosting at the church. The school, modeled loosely on similar schools of half a century ago, is designed to help people learn to sing harmony, or “parts” that are a distinguishing feature of much if not most of southern gospel music over the last 150 years. That skill is dying out as choir members who learned to sing in schools of yesteryear retire and are not replaced by members of equivalent training. The singing school hopes to help remedy that by providing an opportunity for people to learn a new interest and skill to enrich their lives. Green holds a copy of the songbook Miracles, compiled by Charles Towler, instructor for the school. The entire community is invited to attend. Times are Sunday, Nov. 3, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Monday – Thursday evenings, Nov. 4-7, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Call (205) 429-3210 for more information or to indicate your interest. Also, cgreen@otelco.net, to request a space. School is free; an offering will be taken to cover expenses. – Ron Gholson
