Shoplifting incident turns deadly

A shoplifting incident on Saturday, Jan. 11, ended with a pedestrian being struck and killed. Chief Charles Clifton confirmed that Oneonta Police Department responded to an attempted shoplifting incident at Walmart Saturday evening. The merchandise was left outside of the building, and the suspects fled the scene.

As officers arrived, the suspects were seen leaving the Walmart parking lot in a U-Haul truck. OPD began searching for the suspects. An Alabama State Trooper located the suspects’ vehicle, and OPD joined Alabama Law Enforcement Agency on the scene where the vehicle had been stopped. A pedestrian had also been struck and killed at the location.

At approximately 7:35 p.m., Oneonta Fire and Rescue was dispatched to a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle on Ala 75 near County Highway 42 in Oneonta. Upon arriving, the pedestrian was determined deceased, and the coroner’s office had been contacted. The scene was turned over to ALEA and the Blount County Coroner’s Office.

ALEA has identified the female victim as Crystal Lynn Carlson, 34, of Adamsville. An investigation is on-going and no further information has been released regarding the circumstances of the pedestrian being struck and killed.

The driver of the vehicle, Jimmy Smith, 32, of Birmingham, was arrested by Oneonta police and booked into the Blount County Correctional Facility at 8:24 p.m. He was charged with second-degree theft of property and attempt to elude. Bond was set at more than $15,000. Smith remained in jail as of Tuesday afternoon.
