Katie Whisenant had no idea what she was getting into when she attended her Beta Club meeting in May 2007. During that meeting Alacare spoke about becoming a volunteer to work with hospice patients.
Katie is a dedicated volunteer in the Alacare’s Oneonta branch. She files and does other administrative duties to support the staff caring for terminally ill patients. She assists with crafts made for gifts to patients and makes and addresses cards that are mailed to patients and their families. Kay Lilly, Alacare branch director, says Katie is dependable and she has received excellent reviews from the staff.
Her volunteer work is just a small part of Katie’s life. While holding down a part-time job and volunteering with Alacare hospice, Katie has maintained a 4.0 GPA and will serve as valedictorian of the 2009 Cleveland High School class. She is active in Autumnwood Methodist Church in nearby Rosa, where she ministers to the children of the congregation. She was recognized as Miss Blount County 2009 and as Alacare’s Teen Volunteer of the Year 2008. She has been awarded a scholarship to the University of Alabama in Birmingham and will begin in the fall, 2009.
