Veterans appreciation ceremonies will be held Nov. 10 at three high schools in Blount County.
Oneonta High School will hold its program at 8:30 a.m. in the auditorium. Veterans are invited to attend and participate as guests of honor.
Hayden High School plans its program at 1:30 p.m., when the school band will heighten participation for veterans, who stand to the music celebrating their units of service.
J.B. Pennington’s program, also at 1:30 p.m., will feature two veterans as guest speakers.
Many visitors are expected at all three events, according to Robert L. Venable, commander, American Legion Post #72. “Veterans will leave feeling that their service was appreciated by all ages,” said Venable. “These veterans fulfill a promise made by George Washington when he said that the service that is rendered to our country by our youth is in direct correlation to how they perceive their veterans of previous wars are treated.”
Venable also spoke about the flag retirement ceremony he attended Oct. 24: “A feeling of pride permeated the crowd … and we walked away from that ceremony feeling a little better than before we arrived.”
