Sardis wins shootout with Locust Fork



Sardis and Locust Fork combined for 116 points and 1207 yards of offense in a wild 68-48 Lion victory last Friday night at Locust Fork’s Gary Pate Field. Sardis improved to 1-1 overall, 1-0 in 4A Region 6, while Locust Fork fell to 0-2 overall, 0-1 in the region.

The two teams combined for 49 first-quarter points and Locust Fork actually held a 28-21 lead after the first 12 minutes.

However, Sardis outscored the Hornets 19-6 in the second quarter to lead 40-34 at the half.

In the third quarter, Sardis put up 20 points but the Hornets stayed within striking distance with a pair of touchdowns and trailed by just 12 at 60-48 headed to the final 12 minutes.

The Lion defense came up big with a pair of huge stops in the final quarter and the Sardis offense put the game away midway through the quarter with an 8-yard touchdown drive.

The offensive numbers were staggering. Locust Fork piled up 605 yards of offense – 182 on the ground, 423 through the air – while Sardis had 602 yards – 344 on the ground, 258 through the air.

Geoffrey Bramblett completed 30 of 49 passes for 423 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions. He added another 137 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. The total of 560 yards of offense is good for fifth place all time in the state – he had the fourth-best (569 yards) and seventh-best (523 yards) last year.

Bramblett’s two favorite targets – Todd Goodwin and Clay Smith – caught seven passes each for 166 and 109 yards, respectively. Goodwin caught a 69-yard touchdown in the first quarter and Smith had a 59-yard score in the fourth quarter. Kyle Hornbuckle had a 10-yard touchdown reception as part of Locust Fork’s 28-point fourth quarter.

Josh Tawbush had touchdown runs of 25 and 11 yards in the first quarter and Bramblett had touchdown runs of 6 yards and 3 yards.

Sardis got a monster night from senior running back Toby Pee, who rushed for 288 yards and four touchdowns and added 137 yards and two more touchdowns receiving. His total of 415 yards is 24th all time.

Defensively, the Hornets got 12 tackles, including two for loss, from Shiloh Biles. Tawbush added eight tackles while Charlie Hill had a fumble recovery and Bramblett had an interception.
