Safe driving Christmas cash

Before Christmas, Oneonta police officers were looking for drivers who made a complete stop at a stop sign, were wearing their seatbelts, using their turn signals, and the like.

The reason?

A local business donated $1,000 and designated that 10 drivers be awarded $100 each for safe driving. Officers scoped out safe drivers and awarded them a crisp $100 bill for simply obeying the law. The officers were happy to share some Christmas cheer.

Oneonta Police Chief Charles Clifton said there is a possibility the practice may become an annual event. It not only rewards those adhering to safe driving measures, it also creates a stronger bond between the community and the officers. Clifton, who is grateful for the contribution, said, “We love our community, and our community loves our officers. We want to continue that trend.”
