Resignations accepted from Cleveland and Hayden coaches

The resignations of football coaches Anthony Reid (Cleveland) and Shane Howard (Hayden) were accepted during the regular meeting of the Blount County Board of Education earlier this month.

Reid posted a record of 21-30 in five years at Cleveland while Howard was 17- 44 in six years at Hayden. Neither team made the playoffs this year as Hayden finished 2-8 and Cleveland was 3-7.

In other business, the board acted on the recommendation of Superintendent Jim Carr and:

•granted leaves of absence to Rachel Williams, Multi-Needs bus driver; Belinda B. Hall, Cleveland schools bus driver; Jennifer White, Appalachian School teacher; Kathleen Sosebee, Blountsville Elementary teacher; Maria Simmons, Hayden Elementary physical education teacher; Mary Faye Stephens, Cleveland High Child Nutrition Program employee; and Angelene B. Wilemon, Hayden Elementary teacher.

•allowed J.B. Pennington High to contract with Adventure Bus Charter & Tours to transport the school band to and from Chattanooga on Nov. 13. The total amount of this contract shall not exceed $1200 and will be paid from the school’s local funds.

•contracted with the Alabama Youth Home to provide up to 20 hours of educational services per week to certain Blount County students through May 28, 2009. Alabama Youth Home will receive $25 per hour, not to exceed $18,500 from the general fund.

•awarded the bid/contract for HVAC units for the 2008-2009 school year to Wittichen Supply of Gadsden. A copy of the contract is on file in the superintendent’s office.

•renewed the chain link fencing contract with Diamond Fence Co. of Hayden for the 2008-2009 school year.

•contracted with J. Farley Consulting Inc. to conduct Professional Education Personnel Evaluation (PEPE) for principals and central office coordinators during the 2008-2009 school year. The company will receive $625 per employee evaluated plus travel reimbursements as per the board’s guidelines.

•contracted with Jessica Drake to provide homebound services to a Hayden High student through Dec. 19. She will be paid $20 per hour plus travel reimbursement at the board-approved rate and the total amount of the contract shall not exceed $1000. She will be paid from the general fund.

•contracted with Susan Hackett to provide homebound services to a Multi-Needs Center student through May 28, 2009. She will be paid $20 per hour plus travel reimbursement at the board-approved rate and the total amount of the contract shall not exceed $3000. She will be paid from IDEA Part B and/or general funds.

•approved the 2008-2009 continuous improvement plans for Appalachian School, Blount County Multi-Needs Center, Blountsville Elementary, Cleveland Elementary, Cleveland High, Hayden Elementary, Hayden High, Hayden Middle, Hayden Primary, J.B. Pennington, Locust Fork Elementary, Locust Fork High, Southeastern Elementary, Susan Moore Elementary, and Susan Moore High.

•hired Lisha Moody Land as health science teacher with clinical coordination duties, effective Nov. 18. This employment is contingent upon background clearance and certification through the Alabama Department of Education.

•contracted with Darlene Driggers, Rosa Noles, Caleb Salamone, and Mike Qualls to provide remediation to Appalachian School students for sections of the Alabama High School Graduation Examination not passed. These contracts will be paid from High Hopes funds and shall not exceed $1500.

•contracted with Paula Rush and Larry Reid to provide remediation to Cleveland High students for sections of the Alabama High School Graduation Examination not passed. These contracts will be paid from High Hopes funds and shall not exceed $3000.

•contracted with Cynthia Augustine, Bebe McCool, Amanda Faulkner-Barrett, and Katie Haas to provide remediation to Hayden High students for sections of the Alabama High School Graduation Examination not passed. These contracts will be paid from High Hopes funds and shall not exceed $5000.

•contracted with Cathy Marsh to provide remediation to J.B. Pennington High students for sections of the Alabama High School Graduation Examination not passed. This contract will be paid from High Hopes funds and shall not exceed $3500.

•contracted with Barbara Andersen, Becky McCay, Windy Jennings, and Kirk Ingram to provide remediation to Susan Moore High students for sections of the Alabama High School Graduation Examination not passed. These contracts will be paid from High Hopes funds and shall not exceed $6000.

•contracted with Valerie R. Miller to provide remediation to Locust Fork High students for sections of the Alabama High School Graduation Examination not passed. This contract will be paid from High Hopes funds and shall not exceed $7000.

•approved the revised Parent Involvement Policy for the 2008-2009 school year.

•approved the Parent Involvement Plan for the 2008-2009 school year.

•awarded the bid for tires to Wilks Tire & Battery of Albertville.

Finally, the board approved these plans for the 2008-2009 school year: Title I LEA Plan, Homeless Plan, Migrant Plan, and ELL Plan.

Present at the Nov. 3 meeting were board members Andy Neill, Gregg Armstrong, Chris Latta, Bruce McAfee, and Craig Johnson, Superintendent Carr, assistant superintendent Rodney Green, board secretary Karla Latham, and several visitors.
