Remembering those who served

A cool clear day greeted spectators last Saturday for the second annual Blount County Veterans Day Parade. Organizers had worked diligently and tirelessly (but hopefully not thanklessly) to organize an event that serves to honor those who have served our country. Veterans of all wars were honored but especially those of World War II, who collectively served as grand marshals.Walt Whitman said it best of veterans in his poem, “A Nation’s Strength” – “Not gold, but only man can make, A people great and strong; Men who, for truth and honor’s sake, Stand fast and suffer long. Brave men who work while others sleep,Who dare while others fly – They build a nation’s pillars deep, And lift them to the sky.” – Rob Rice
