Blount County had two teams make the top 10 in the preseason high school football poll released last week by the Alabama Sports Writers Association (ASWA) and another school just missed the top 10.
Oneonta is the highest ranked team from the county in the preseason coming in at No. 5 in Class 4A. The Redskins are coming off a 10-3 campaign that saw the season come to an end with a loss to Cherokee County in the quarterfinals of the playoffs.
Susan Moore is ranked No. 10 in Class 3A after finishing the 2008 season at 9-3 with a loss to Piedmont in the second round of the playoffs.
Appalachian is just out of the top 10 at No. 12 in Class 1A. The Eagles were 10-3 a year ago and lost to Gaston in the quarterfinals.
High school football practice started Monday and the season kicks off either Thursday, Aug. 27, or Friday, Aug. 28. Most schools in the area will play a fall jamboree on either Aug. 20 or Aug. 21.
