Redskins leash Bulldogs

The Oneonta Redskins traveled to Dora Friday night and handed the Bulldogs their first loss of the season.

In an exciting first quarter, Dora put points on the board first. The Bulldogs capped their first drive with a field goal with 6:58 on the clock. The Redskins mounted an impressive first drive, but were unable to score and punted. Dora started out on their own 25 and fumbled on the first snap. Wil Robertson scooped it and scored. Riley McGill’s PAT was good to give the Redskins a 7-3 lead with 2:15 left. Dora struck right back. After fumbling and recovering their first snap after kickoff, they pulled a trick play on second- and-20 going 65 yards for the TD. The point-after made it 10-7 Dora with 1:06 on the clock. Oneonta would not be outdone. Connor Faust found Luke Hodge on their first play after kickoff for a 58-yard touchdown with 0:48 left to go. McGill’s point-after was good to give the 14- 10 lead back to Oneonta.

Oneonta scored the only points of the second quarter. A bad snap to Dora’s punter gave Oneonta excellent field position for their first drive. Starting from Dora’s 11-yard line, the Redskins couldn’t gain enough for the first down and opted for a field goal. McGill struck true on the 27-yard attempt with 9:17 on the clock and widened Oneonta’s lead to 17-10. Both teams’ defenses stepped up and the half ended with Oneonta leading 17-10.

Neither team could manage points in the third quarter. Dora ended the quarter with an impressive drive capped by a 60-yard touchdown pass in the opening seconds of the fourth. A good PAT tied it up 17-17. Oneonta answered immediately. Faust hit Eli Buse on the first snap after kickoff for a 65-yard TD with 11:35 left to play. McGill’s PAT put Oneonta up 24-17. Oneonta sealed the deal after another Dora special teams mistake. The Bulldogs called for a fair catch on an Oneonta punt, dropped the ball, and the Redskins recovered on Dora’s 25-yard line. It was all Collin Moon on the five-play drive capped by an 8-yard TD run. McGill’s PAT sealed Oneonta’s victory with 0:41 left in the game.

Faust completed 7-of-17 for 157 yards and two touchdowns. Moon gained 94 yards on 20 carries and scored one TD. Buse was the leading receiver with 90 yards on four catches with one touchdown. Luke Hodge caught one pass for 58 yards.

Leading the Redskin defense were Hodge with 16 tackles (two TFL) and Robertson with 14 tackles (one TFL) and a fumble recovery. Beau Ragsdale had 11 tackles (three TFL) and a sack. Cameron Dailey had nine tackles (five for loss) and a sack; Buse had eight total tackles (two for loss) and Andrew Beck had seven (three for loss).

Oneonta improves to 2-1 (2-1 region) and hosts county rival Susan Moore Friday night at 7 p.m. in the third of four consecutive Bulldog matchups. Dora drops to 3-1 and travels to Corner.
