Oneonta hosted Good Hope last Friday. Game time weather conditions were questionable all week leading up to the contest. Neither Good Hope nor the elements could stop the Redskins as they continued marching through the state playoffs.
The Redskins scored on their first drive when David Hall sprinted two yards to the end zone for a touchdown. Erick Vargus kicked the ball between the uprights and Oneonta was in the lead 7-0.
Oneonta continued superb play in the second quarter. With less than a minute left, Taveris Hill connected with Brandon Howard for a three-yard touchdown pass and the Redskins went into the locker room leading 14-0.
During the third quarter, Hill threw a 53-yard touchdown pass to Jaden Kent to put the score at 20-0. Two points were tacked on after Brody Pinyan’s pass to Hall. The defense proceeded to stop the Raiders as they remained scoreless.
Oneonta continued their scoring session at the beginning of the fourth quarter when Hall ran 30 yards for a touchdown. Good Hope’s only points followed and the game ended 29-8.
Hill completed 11-of-20 for 173 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Kent caught five passes for 95 yards and a touchdown. Hall carried the ball eight times for 83 yards and two touchdowns.
The defense dominated and had multiple leaders. Kent led with 13 tackles. Beau Ragsdale and Luke Hodge had 12 tackles each. Daniel McCary had eight.
Oneonta improves to 10-3 and will travel to Deshler (8-5) for the 4A semi-finals this Friday. Deshler and Oneonta have met on three occasions; Oneonta holds a 2-1 margin over the Tigers.
Tickets are $10 and available online at www.ahsaa.com or can be purchased at the gate. The winner will play the winner of the Andalusia versus UMS Wright game at Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium for the 4A state championship.
There will be a community pep rally for the Redskins tomorrow, Nov. 29, at 7 p.m., in downtown Oneonta in front of SwampTails Restaurant.
