The Hayden Wildcats opened Class 5A Region 7 play on the road in Moulton against Lawrence County. The Red Devils beat the Wildcats 27-14.
Hayden took a 7-0 lead into halftime following a 4-yard run by Evan Orr. Jacob Dowd’s point after was good with 3:51 remaining in the half.
On the third play of the second half, Lawrence County scored on a 62-yard pass from Ty Hutto to Malik Strickland. Ben Michael Bennett tied the score at 7 with 11:24 on the third-quarter clock. Hayden’s Braden Hodges had an apparent interception at the Devils 20-yard line before a video review overturned the play. Lawrence County scored two plays later on a 66-yard pass from Hutto to Allen Johnson. The point after failed, but Lawrence County had a 13-7 lead with 5:30 remaining in the third quarter.
The Red Devils added two fourth-quarter scores. Hayden added a score with 2:36 to go on Orr’s second TD of the night on a 2-yard run.
The Wildcats next three games will be against three top 10 teams in Class 5A. Hayden hosts Russellville Friday at 7 p.m., then play at number one Jasper, then host Mortimer Jordan.
