My name is Brice Marsh. I was born and raised in Blount County; and until recently was a property owner and taxpayer there. I still have many friends and relatives in Blount County and I feel like it’s “home” even though I no longer live there. In other words, I love Blount County!
Now, about Dean Calvert. I don’t know the man, never met him, wouldn’t recognize him if I met him face to face. But I’ve read a lot about him in recent issues of The Blount Countian; and I’m disturbed about the way he has been treated.
I’m not writing to defend his actions, no way!
In fact, I have not seen nor heard his remarks on Facebook or YouTube or whatever media was mentioned, nor do I intend to do so.
Has he been accused of using county equipment and labor to build a road on his personal property? If so, I haven’t heard about it.
Has he been accused of taking kick backs on purchases of county vehicles or earth moving equipment? If so, I haven’t heard about it.
Has he been accused of embezzlement of county funds? If so, I haven’t heard about it.
These are the types of charges for which a man could lose his job, his career, perhaps spend time in prison.
But to make an off-color remark, in private, that is offensive to someone or to a given group of people – even profanity (that would be most offensive to me) – is NOT even close to being a reason for termination!
As a leader, he should be held to a higher standard, but to destroy his reputation and his means of income for life… don’t you think that’s almost like taking him to the guillotine and chopping off his head?
In my opinion, folks who are quick to condemn him have been snared into the “woke” crowd and are wearing the badge of the “cancel culture.”
I’m 82 and I’m struggling to understand these things. We older folks just call them self-righteous hypocrites.
It doesn’t cost them a nickel to ask for another person’s head on the block!
For shame, for shame!
