RAViNe, Eat Your Locals

Nestled about three miles south of the historic Square in Oxford, Miss., amongst oak and pine, is a charming restaurant and inn called RAViNe. After winding down a short stretch of a county road, one is pleasantly surprised to find this rustic log cabin tucked around the bend.

Once inside, the interior of the chalet provides an inviting atmosphere of true comfort and relaxation, where locals and out-of-towners alike come for a sophisticated dining experience enhanced by great ambience and locally sourced fare.

RAViNe, the 2017 local winner of Best Farm to Table Restaurant, was the vision of Joel (above) and Cori Miller. They were inspired many years ago after working and living in northern California, where the resurgence of the slow food movement could be seen on the menus of city restaurants, and in the Napa wineries.

Having an acclaimed culinary background, Joel Miller serves as RAViNe’s chef. Locally grown and seasonal foods are a central focus for Miller and the menu changes weekly.

Despite having encountered much resistance at first, Miller has worked hard for 10 years cultivating relationships with Mississippi farmers in order to provide the freshest ingredients.

Miller’s extensive farm network is credited at the bottom of his menus, and lists purveyors of everything from eggs, pork, produce, beef, lamb, and poultry to local artisan potters who craft some of the plates and bowls seen on the tables.

Seasonal offerings include seared duck breast, house ground beef tenderloin mini burgers, and locally raised rack of lamb. In addition, Miller also bakes most of his bread, pickles his own vegetables, and makes his own ice cream, with flavors like olive oil and chocolate chipotle.

Vegan and vegetarian dishes are also available.

Some of the food is picked from the RAViNe’s own gardens and they provide a beautiful view from the outdoor terrace.

Adjacent to the restaurant, the guesthouse offers a, queen size bed, kitchenette, satellite TV, wireless Internet access, and guests can enjoy a full size breakfast. One can spend the day sitting in the rocking chairs gazing into the woods under the covered front porch, or soaking up some sun while relaxing by the outdoor pool.

Rooms are also available for rent upstairs in the main house.

The RAViNe is now in its 10th year of operation. The restaurant, which is open Wednesday through Sunday, offers four different menus, including tapas on Wednesday, and a fabulous Sunday brunch.

As for Wednesday’s tapas, Miller fully embraces this concept. “It is the way I prefer to eat when dining out — getting little tastes of everything.”

Sundays offer brunch followed by prix fixe family-suppers, which is a meal consisting of several courses served at a fixed price. Miller said, “Brunch has gotten so popular in the past few years – we bake cinnamon rolls fresh every Sunday morning, and the orange juice is always fresh squeezed.”

The Millers invite you to come and share a wonderful getaway at the RAViNe. They are located at 53 County Road 321, Oxford, Miss.
