The 14th annual Radio-thon will be held tomorrow ( Thursday) from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. The Radio-thon gives the Blount County community a chance to donate money to the Blount County Education Foundation. The foundation uses the contributions to fund their numerous projects but most importantly their Classroom Grant Project, which has provided more than $800,000 to Blount County classrooms since 1998.
“The Blount County Education Foundation is very grateful to the Blount County community for all the support and encouragement we’ve received,” said Mitchie Neel, executive director of the Blount County Education Foundation. “The response this year is so great, and we expect the call-ins during the Radio-thon to continue that tradition of great support.”Radio-thon features students, teachers, and administrators from all the schools in the county who will discuss their schools and how the Foundation has impacted them and their classrooms. Also featured will be partners, those who donated $250 or more, of the Foundation. Contributions of any amount will be accepted, but those who donate $100 or more will be entered into a drawing for grand prizes including a trip to the beach provided by Adams Construction, a trip to the beach provided by Perdido Beach Resort, a trip to the Bynum’s River Cabin, Auburn and Alabama Tailgate Packages, a commemorative Alabama Nationby al Championship Football, a Greg Gamble Auburn print, a Daniel Moore Alabama print provided by Creative Frame and Trophy, $300 gift certificate to Shirley’s Fine Jewelry, and more.
More than $100,000 has been raised during the Radio-thon for the past four years and the Education Foundation is looking forward to going “five-for-five.” In total, all special projects over the years have generated $1.6 million for Blount County Schools.
The event will be hosted by Les Neel, and the Foundation directors step in to co-host. Staring at noon, Probate Judge Chris Green will co-host for an hour and Peyton Hazelrig will do the same during the three o’clock hour. At 9 a.m., the Charles Carr Signature Endowed Grant will be announced, and at 10:30 a.m. James McCrary of the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham will discuss the $90,000 grant his foundation awarded to the Education Foundation for their library and summer camps.
