Samantha Sloan of Hayden High School and Ashley Evatt of Susan Moore High School received $1,000 scholarships from the Blount County Quilters Guild at their high school award ceremonies last week. They were selected from 26 entries representing high schools in Blount County.

Samantha, daughter of Scott and Lisa Sloan, will be a prepharmacy major at Auburn University in the fall. Ashley, daughter of Katrina Jennings and William Evatt, will major in nursing at UAB.

Entrants were asked to write an essay on the topic “What Quilts Mean to Me.” Essays were judged on development of the topic, grammar, composition, and spelling. A committee selected winners based on points awarded for each category.

Scholarships are funded by proceeds from the Quilters Guild quilt show at Palisades Park during the fall Covered Bridge Festival, and by ticket sales for the annual fundraiser quilt raffle. The Guild also sells quilts and crafts to support other community projects.

The Guild meets weekly at the Quilters Cottage in Palisades Park on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Those interested in membership may call president Phyllis Morse, (205) 994-4749.
