The Piedmont Bulldogs, the defending state champion and current No. 3 team in the state, came to Blountsville last Friday night and had little trouble with the J.B. Pennington Tigers in a 48-13 victory.
The visiting Bulldogs jumped out to a 34-0 lead at the half but the Tigers didn’t go down without a fight.
Senior quarterback Lee Morton fired touchdown passes of 60 yards to T.J. Sorensen and 35 yards to Steven Moore to put the home team on the board and cut the lead to 34-13 after three quarters.
Piedmont answered with a pair of scores in the final quarter to pull away.
Morton posted season highs in attempts (32), completions (13), yards (222), and touchdowns (2). He was intercepted just once.
The Tigers managed just 49 yards on the ground with Wesley Stephens rushing for 30 yards on six carries.
Cody Duckett caught four passes for 32 yards while Sorensen, Moore, and Dustin Sivley caught three each. Moore had 83 yards and a touchdown and Sorensen had 79 yards and a score. Sivley’s three passes went for 28 yards.
Tyler Love had 14 tackles to lead the Tiger defense while Sivley had 10 stops.
J.B. Pennington (0-4 overall, 0-3 in 3A Region 6) will travel to Saks (3-1, 3-1) this week.
