An accident in the 1400 block of Valley Road took the life of an Oneonta man on Dec. 22.
James Andrew Smith, 33, was walking along the pavement on Valley Road around 10:30 p.m., when he was struck and killed by an approaching vehicle.
According to Oneonta Police Investigator Jimmy Baldwin, Smith was wearing dark clothing and struck in an area of Valley Road that is not well lit.
Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. No charges were filed as this incident was ruled an accident.
OPD has also been working the case of stolen music equipment from the Oneonta Church of God, just north of Oneonta. The break-in occurred on Dec. 17.
Investigators registered the music equipment in National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and pawn records were checked. The stolen guitar was located and recovered at a pawn shop in Birmingham.
After further investigation, Baldwin reports the stolen Peavey feedback monitor was located at a suspect’s home in Oneonta.
Clifford Thomas McCartney was arrested on charges of second-degree burglary and first-degree theft of property. His address is listed in North Carolina; however, he has been living in Oneonta.
The passing of counterfeit money within the city is currently under investigation by OPD.
As the investigation is ongoing, few details have been released. Warrants for the suspect have been obtained; however, no arrest has been made.
Baldwin furthermore reported a marked increase in the burglary of vehicles and firearms over the past few weeks.
He encourages everyone to keep their vehicles locked at all times, park in well lit areas, and don’t leave firearms in vehicles.
According to Baldwin, firearms have proven to be very difficult to recover.
