Panthers pound Bulldogs



Cleveland was on the road last Friday, traveling to Gaston for a match up with the Bulldogs. The Panthers put up 48 points in the opening quarter on their way to a 61-7 region win.

It took just 52 seconds for the Panthers to get on the scoreboard. Tyler Smith ran the first one in from the 3-yard line. Logan Washburn scored next on a 58-yard run. For touchdown number three, Washburn found Pierce Gilliland for a 39-yard TD reception. Will Corder caught a 9-yard pass from Washburn for the Panthers’ fourth touchdown while Jacob Johnson’s 19-yard reception was good for number five and Karter Adams’ 20-yard reception gave them six TDs. Smith’s 17-yard rushing touchdown was the Panthers’ seventh and final TD of the first quarter. Jeremy Acosta hit 6-of-7 extra point attempts to give the Panthers a 48-0 lead.

Walker added six more on a 7-yard run in the second quarter. Acosta’s extra point gave the Panthers a 55-0 advantage. Gaston finally got on the scoreboard with 1:12 left in the first half, sending the game into halftime with the Panthers up 55-7.

The Panthers scored one more time. Eric Rosas got in from the 1-yard line with 40 seconds left in the third quarter to give the Panthers 61.

Cleveland outgunned Gaston 292 yards to 64. The Panther defense held the Bulldogs to 64 yards on the ground and 0 yards through the air while forcing five fumbles and one interception.

Washburn finished the game with five completions on six attempts for 97 yards and four TDs. Gilliland caught one pass for 39 yards and a score; Adams caught one for 20 yards and a score; Johnson caught one for 19 yards and a score; and Corder caught one for 9 yards and a score.

Walker led the running game with 75 yards and one TD. Washburn finished with 58 yards and a touchdown and Rosas finished with 35 and a touchdown. Smith scored twice and ran for 29 yards.

The defense was led by Adams with eight tackles and a fumble recovery. Dakota Shelton and Kevin Chavez finished with seven tackles and a sack while Rosas and Tray Thomas each finished with six. Smith intercepted Gaston’s QB while Adams recovered one fumble, Luis Saucedo recovered two fumbles, Edwin Chavez recovered one, and John McRae recovered one.

This Friday, the Panthers host Westbrook Christian in another 2A Region 6 match up.
