Operation Grateful Heart enthusiastic about events for veterans

Operation Grateful Heart is diligently planning and organizing the annual Veterans Dinner and Veterans Day Parade.

The Veterans Dinner will be served Friday, Nov. 4, at 5:30 p.m. at Oneonta National Guard Armory. The dinner is free to veterans and their spouses and dress is casual or military. Charlie B’s is catering the meal. For reservations, phone Amy Rhudy at the Blount County Memorial Museum, 625-6905.

The 2011 Veterans Day Parade will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, in Oneonta; lineup begins at 9 a.m. Rain date is scheduled for Nov. 12. Anyone interested in building a float and needing work space needs to phone Aimee Wilson at the county-city Chamber of Commerce, 274-2153, or Amy Rhudy by Oct. 28 to reserve a space.

Candy is not to be thrown from floats in the parade; though people walking beside floats may hand candy to children. Because of liability and regulations, no all-terrain vehicles, horsed vehicles, or threeor four-wheelers will be allowed.

Parade theme is “Our Veterans: Our Unsung Heroes.” Bands, churches, businesses, organizations, clubs, individuals, Scout troops, and other groups are encouraged to participate and show their patriotism.

“We want everyone in the county to come and show their support for our veterans,” said Operation Grateful Heart member Dalton Wester.
