Oneonta, Southeastern place in AMSTI STEM challenge



On Friday, April 5, around 400 students converged on the campus of Wallace State Community College in Hanceville for Athens State’s inaugural AMSTI STEM challenge. The event drew second- through sixth-graders from Limestone County, Athens City, Cullman County, Blount County, and Oneonta City schools. Students competed in a team-building exercise against a total of 25 teams in their grade level.

Oneonta Elementary School’s fifthgrade STEM team (pictured above) took first place. The team is comprised of Lily Taylor, Jake Young, Griffin Coe, Jaylynn Fry, and Ryland Sherrer. Coaches are teachers Maggie Battles and Stefanie Weston.

Southeastern Elementary’s fifth-grade STEM team (pictured at right) placed third. Team members are Addison Self, Emma Moon, Faith Greer, Ian Hodgin, Derek Byrd, Hunter Wilson, Laney Howell, Isleigh Hicks, Susan Vaught, and Ty Fortenberry. They are coached by Melissa Presley.
