Oneonta sets calendar, hires part-time librarian

Mostly matching state and county calendars, the Oneonta City Council adopted its 2012 holiday schedule. The city will take Jan. 2 and 16 as New Year’s and Robert E. Lee – Martin Luther King days, Feb. 20 (Presidents’ Day), April 23 (Confederate Memorial Day), May 28 (national Memorial Day), June 4 ( Jefferson Davis’s Birthday), July 4 (Independence Day), Sept. 3 (Labor Day), Oct. 8 (Columbus Day), Nov. 12 ( Veterans Day), Nov. 22 and 23 ( Thanksgiving), and Dec. 24 and 25 (Christmas).

At the recommendation of its library board and director Gail Sheldon, the council voted to hire Virginia Dickie as a part-time circulation librarian. Beautification board chair Marlene Stroud announced the December award winners: Gene and Glenda Vinson (residential) and Tin Town Trading Company (commercial). Stroud explained the board decided the December awards based on holiday decorations.

City manager Ed Lowe advised the council that 99 percent of the work on the tennis courts is complete. The work entails adding two new courts and resurfacing the old. The facility will allow the high school teams greater opportunity to host tournaments.

Councilman Hal Buckelew missed the Dec. 14 meeting. All other members (Mayor Darryl Ray, and councilors Mark Gargus, Tim McNair, Ross Norris, and Danny Robinson) attended. The council holds its regular sessions the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 5: 30 p. m. Ray advised that the council will meet Dec. 27, unlike some other governmental bodies, who will take the holidays off.
