Beginning with the 2011-2012 school year, Oneonta High School is excluded from participating in any Blount County athletic tournament.
“We just feel that it is time for (the Blount County system) to have our own championships,” said Blount County Supt. Jim Carr.
“That comes from all facets of our system – from the coaches, administrators, board members, and fans. There was not an official vote or anything of that nature but just a general consensus from our people that it was time for us to have our own.”
While the county basketball tournament is what comes to the minds of most sports fans, other sports are involved. The county schools and Oneonta are currently involved in the county baseball tournament, and tournaments are also played in softball, volleyball, and golf. Oneonta will also not participate in the county track meet.
“We’ll move on and try to build as good a schedule for each sport as we can,” said Oneonta Supt. Scott Coefield. “It’s their decision and we have to respect it.”
Carr says that while Oneonta will no longer participate in county tournaments, regular season scheduling will be up to the individual schools.
