Oneonta man charged with rape commits suicide in Missouri

Jason Thomas Bates, 35, of Oneonta, was found dead, after apparently committing suicide, outside his mother’s home in Missouri, according to authorities. Bates was charged with the rape and sexual abuse of a young girl earlier this month and is also a suspect in nine other cases.

On Dec. 5, he was charged with two counts of firstdegree rape, two counts of first-degree sodomy, and one count of sex abuse of a child, booked into the Blount County Correctional Facility, and was later released on a $300,000 bond.

The day after authorities searched his home in late November, Bates attempted suicide and was hospitalized at St. Vincent’s East before being released on Dec. 5, according to reports. He was then arrested and placed in jail.

During the search of Bates’ home, authorities found and seized computers, cameras, video cameras, pornographic videos, and other electronic devices.

The investigation began after the teenage girl told authorities Bates had sexually abused her for years including sexual intercourse, oral sex, and videotaping sex acts, sources say.

Investigators are still waiting for confirmation of Bates’ identity through fingerprints and DNA.
