One killed, two injured in head-on collision on Co. Rd. 1

A head-on collision between a Dodge Dakota truck and a Volkswagen Passat on County Road 1 just north of St. Andrews Parkway resulted in one fatality and two injuries Sunday about 7 p.m., according to Blount County Coroner John Mark Vaughn.

Dead at the scene of the fiery crash was Perry Layne Coleman, 35, of Birmingham, driver of the Dakota.

Two passengers in the Volkswagen, a woman, Maria del Rocio Hernandez Mora, and her child, were injured. The mother was taken to UAB Hospital where her condition was listed as critical, and the child was taken to Children’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. As of Tuesday, the mother’s condition was improving, while the child has been released to the family.

Before the accident, a BOLO for reckless driving had been issued for a vehicle matching the description of the truck. Vaughn said the child was protected from serious injury by being securely restrained in a properly-installed car seat of good quality.
