The Oneonta Fire and Rescue Service, State Farm Insurance, and the National Fire Protection Association have teamed up to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” The campaign takes place Oct. 7 through 11 focusing on educating everyone about important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.
According to NFPA, U.S. fire departments responded to 357,000 home structure fires in 2017. In all, there were 2,630 fire deaths and 10,600 fire injuries that year. On average, seven people per day died in a house fire during the 2012 – 2016 time period.
Community Risk Reduction Officer Jonathan Ledbetter reiterated the importance being aware of your surroundings. He said, “If the alarm sounds, take it seriously and immediately exit the building.”
Over the next few weeks, Oneonta Fire and Rescue Service will be hosting a series of events to promote the campaign. Happenings will include teaching fire safety to Oneonta Elementary School and local church daycares. Each child will receive a calendar that offers a different fire safety message each month. The fire department is also hosting the “Ride a fire truck to school” contest.
