EASLEY BRIDGE CLEANUP DATE The Friends of the Covered Bridges of Blount County will host a bridge clean-up at the Easley Covered Bridge, just north of Oneonta, on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 7 a.m. Please join us as we ready the Easley bridge for the Covered Bridge Festival. Bring chainsaws and pruning tools for tree and brush removal. In the event of rain, the clean-up will be held on Oct. 15 at the same time. Easley bridge is located just off U.S. 231 north of Oneonta. Turn off U.S. 231 at Pine Grove Church and follow Pine Grove Road to reach the bridge (parking is limited from this direction) or, turn off of U.S. 231 onto county road 33 at Rosa United Methodist Church and turn left onto Easley Bridge Road (better parking from this direction). JIMMIE HALE MISSION invites the public to open house and celebration of the expansion of its Royal Pines Recovery Center, 5 Guinns Cove Road, Hayden. A brief ceremony will take place at 2:30 Sunday, Oct. 2, followed by an informal reception. Royal Pines Recovery Center is a 16-week, in-resident center for men and uses a Biblical approach to overcoming life’s struggles. The two-phase program includes therapy, education remediation, and career readiness.

BLOUNT COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER INC. (BCASI) has received a $20,000, two-year grant from PetSmart Charities to increase the number of spay/neuter surgeries in Blount County, according to Dinah Wilson. The generous grant enables BCASI to offer $20 Spay Days with local vets. Call 647-8340 to schedule an appointment. “BCASI is one of several volunteer groups in Blount County that are dedicated to humane welfare and work tirelessly toward ending the problem of pet overpopulation. This grant makes a tremendous difference in what we can accomplish,” Wilson said.
